South Africa completed a commanding 109-run victory over Sri Lanka in the second Test at St George’s Park on Monday, sealing a 2-0 series sweep. The Proteas were led by a sensational bowling performance from Keshav Maharaj, who took five wickets for 76 runs. Sri Lanka was bowled out for 238 in just 70 minutes of play on the final day of the match.

THRILLING FINALE ENDS IN SOUTH AFRICA’S FAVOR

The match had been set up for a dramatic finish, with both teams needing a win to stay alive in the race for a spot in the World Test Championship final next June. Sri Lanka started the day at 205-5, still needing 143 runs for victory. South Africa, on the other hand, required just five more wickets to complete the win.

However, what was expected to be a nail-biting finish turned into an anticlimax as South Africa's bowlers swiftly dismantled the Sri Lankan batting lineup. This victory added to their comprehensive 233-run win in the first Test in Durban, ensuring a comfortable series sweep.

EARLY BREAKTHROUGHS SET THE TONE

South Africa wasted no time in making a breakthrough, dismissing Sri Lanka’s middle-order in quick succession. It took only seven overs for the Proteas to strike, ending a 97-run partnership between Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva. Mendis, who had scored 46 runs, was caught by Aiden Markram off a sharp delivery from Maharaj. The dismissal was reviewed by the television umpire to confirm Markram’s clean catch.

The departure of Mendis was soon followed by the dismissal of Sri Lanka's captain, Dhananjaya de Silva. De Silva, who had made a gritty 50, was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada, edging a fast delivery that was caught by wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne.

SRI LANKA'S TAIL COLLAPSES QUICKLY

With the top order gone, Sri Lanka’s tail was exposed, and the Proteas bowlers took full advantage. Maharaj continued his excellent form, dismissing Prabath Jayasuriya and Vishwa Fernando. Jayasuriya was caught by Temba Bavuma at extra cover, while Fernando was caught by Marco Jansen after a mistimed slog.

The final wicket came when Jansen removed Lahiru Kumara, wrapping up the match and ensuring South Africa’s victory.

SOUTH AFRICA TOPS WTC STANDINGS

The win not only sealed the series but also propelled South Africa to the top of the World Test Championship standings, enhancing their chances of securing a spot in the final. South Africa’s dominance in both Tests demonstrated their strength as a team, with solid performances from both their batting and bowling units.
