The Indian cricket team is gearing up for a challenging five-Test series in Australia, commencing November 22 in Perth. However, the squad may be without captain Rohit Sharma for one of the opening matches due to personal matters he has communicated to the BCCI.
Reports indicate that Rohit may miss either the first Test or the second Test in Adelaide, scheduled for December 6-10. "There isn’t full clarity regarding the situation. Rohit has informed the BCCI about the possibility of needing to skip one of the initial Tests due to pressing personal reasons," a BCCI source revealed to PTI on the condition of anonymity.
If Rohit can resolve his personal issues before the series starts, he could participate in all five Tests. Further updates on his status are expected soon.
The 37-year-old captain recently played both home Tests against Bangladesh, and India will host New Zealand for a three-Test series starting October 16.
Should Rohit be unable to play in Australia, Abhimanyu Easwaran is likely to step in as his replacement. Easwaran, who is currently leading the India A team, will also be in Australia. Other experienced options include Shubman Gill and KL Rahul for the opening slot.
As for the vice-captaincy, no official deputy has been appointed for Rohit during the recent home series against Bangladesh. Several candidates are in the running, including Gill, pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who has captained in a Test match in England, and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.
Abhishek Nayar highlighted the abundance of IPL leaders in the current squad, mentioning that players like Gill, Rishabh Pant, and potentially Yashasvi Jaiswal possess the leadership qualities needed. "We should not view them merely as youngsters. They may be younger in age, but their mental maturity and cricketing experience equip them with the necessary leadership attributes," he stated, emphasizing that having a designated vice-captain is not essential.
As the team prepares for this vital series, fans and selectors alike await clarity on Rohit's situation and potential leadership changes.
