Ravichandran Ashwin Retires: India’s Second-Highest Wicket-Taker Bids Farewell to International Cricket
3 days ago
Ravichandran Ashwin, one of India’s greatest off-spinners, has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 38. Ashwin confirmed his decision following India’s drawn third Test against Australia at the Gabba, bringing an illustrious 13-year career to an end. With 537 Test wickets, he stands as India’s second-highest wicket-taker, behind only the legendary Anil Kumble’s 619. Ashwin is set to return to India tomorrow.
Reflecting on his journey, Ashwin expressed gratitude to the BCCI, teammates, and coaches during the post-match press conference. "This is my last day as an international cricketer. I’ve made wonderful memories and had a lot of fun. I will continue to play club cricket," he said. Speculation around his retirement had grown after an emotional moment with Virat Kohli during a rain break on Day 5. Sunil Gavaskar hinted at the announcement during the live broadcast, which was confirmed shortly after.
Ashwin’s retirement comes midway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he played only one match in Adelaide. Despite a quiet series, Ashwin’s legacy remains unparalleled. Over 106 Tests, 116 ODIs, and 65 T20Is, he amassed 775 wickets across formats, with 37 five-wicket hauls in Tests. His prowess against left-handers and dominance at home – 383 wickets in India at an average of 21.57 – made him a force to reckon with. Beyond his bowling, Ashwin contributed with the bat, scoring 3503 runs, including six centuries.
A LEGENDARY CAREER BUILT ON SKILL AND RESILIENCE
Ashwin debuted in 2010 in ODIs against Sri Lanka and made his Test debut the following year against the West Indies. His rise began in the IPL with Chennai Super Kings under MS Dhoni, where he earned a reputation as a new-ball specialist, dismissing power-hitters like Chris Gayle. Dhoni’s trust in Ashwin paved the way for his success on the international stage.
A key figure in India’s 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy wins, Ashwin’s brilliance was most evident in Tests. His consistency, adaptability, and tactical acumen made him indispensable, particularly on Indian pitches. Despite being underutilized in SENA countries, Ashwin delivered stellar performances, including iconic moments like his partnership with Hanuma Vihari at the SCG in 2020, which helped India secure a memorable draw.
As he steps away from international cricket, Ashwin leaves behind an unmatched legacy. His achievements include being the highest wicket-taker among off-spinners in Tests, though Nathan Lyon is poised to surpass his record. Fans will next see Ashwin don the yellow jersey for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025, marking the start of a new chapter in his cricketing journey.
