Ahead of the Test series of the New Zealand tour of India, Jasprit Bumrah has been appointed as the vice-captain of Team India, a decision reflecting his vital role within the squad.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made a significant announcement as the Indian squad was unveiled for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand. While Rohit Sharma continues as the team captain, pacer Jasprit Bumrah has officially been designated as the vice-captain, underscoring his status as one of the team's most crucial players. Despite limited captaincy experience, Bumrah has long been an integral member of the leadership group.

In a pre-match press conference, Rohit discussed Bumrah's new role, emphasizing the value of his insights during matches. “Bumrah has extensive experience in cricket. I've played alongside him for a long time, and he has a deep understanding of the game. When you converse with him, it’s clear he knows what’s happening,” Rohit stated, acknowledging Bumrah's tactical acumen despite his limited captaincy history, having captained only one Test and a few T20s.

Rohit believes that in critical situations, Bumrah will naturally step up as a leader. “He has consistently been part of our leadership discussions, providing guidance to both seasoned and young bowlers,” he noted.

In addition to his role as vice-captain, Bumrah will be instrumental in mentoring the emerging pace bowlers within the squad. Rohit explained, “Whether it's advising newcomers or participating in team strategy sessions, Bumrah’s presence in the leadership group is invaluable. His experience will help steer the team in the right direction.”

Rohit also touched on the fitness of fellow pacer Mohammed Shami, indicating that Shami’s return for the Australia tour remains uncertain. “Currently, it’s challenging to assess his fitness for this series or the upcoming Australia tour. He recently experienced unusual swelling in his knee, which has hindered his recovery,” Rohit elaborated, noting that Shami is currently training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) with medical staff.

In summary, Bumrah's appointment as vice-captain reflects both his importance to the team and his potential as a leader, while the squad awaits further updates on Shami’s fitness.
