Mumbai Indians (MI) will begin their IPL 2025 campaign without their regular captain, Hardik Pandya, who is serving a one-match suspension due to his team’s over-rate offence from the previous season. This suspension means Hardik will miss MI’s season opener against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday.

SURYAKUMAR YADAV STEPS UP AS STAND-IN CAPTAIN

In Hardik's absence, star batter Suryakumar Yadav will take over the captaincy for the first match, a decision confirmed by Hardik himself during a press conference on Wednesday. Hardik, joined by MI's head coach Mahela Jayawardene, expressed confidence in Suryakumar’s leadership, noting his experience captaining the Indian team.

“Suryakumar Yadav leads India as well. He will lead Mumbai Indians in the first match,” Hardik said when addressing his suspension. He also shared his appreciation for the leadership support within the team, mentioning, “I’m fortunate to have three captains with me – Rohit (Sharma), Surya, and (Jasprit) Bumrah. They’ve always got my back, offering guidance when needed.”

JASPRIT BUMRAH'S AVAILABILITY STILL UNCERTAIN

Despite the leadership changes, Mumbai Indians are still unsure when Jasprit Bumrah, the team’s premier bowler, will return from his back injury. Currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bumrah's availability remains uncertain. Jayawardene provided an update, saying, “We have to wait for feedback from the NCA. He’s in good spirits, but it’s a matter of time before he joins us. While it’s a challenge not having him, it’s also an opportunity for someone else to rise to the occasion.”

HARDIK PANDYA REFLECTS ON IPL RULE AND SUSPENSION

When questioned about the IPL’s policy of carrying over disciplinary offenses from one season to the next, Hardik shared his perspective. “It’s beyond my control,” Hardik said. “Last year, we were late by one and a half to two minutes in the last over. At that time, I wasn’t aware of the consequences. It’s unfortunate, but the rules are the rules. Whether this rule will be revised next season is something for the authorities to decide.”

MI FACES TOUGH CHALLENGE WITHOUT KEY PLAYERS

The absence of both Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah presents a tough challenge for Mumbai Indians, particularly since the team hasn’t won an IPL season opener since 2012. Coach Mahela Jayawardene acknowledged the difficulty but emphasized the opportunity for others to step up. “It’s a tough challenge ahead, but it’s also an opportunity for others to show their worth,” he stated.

As the Mumbai Indians prepare for their crucial opening match against Chennai Super Kings, the team’s resilience and leadership depth will be tested.
