In a surprising turn of events, Rajasthan Royals (RR) have announced that Riyan Parag will lead the team in the first three matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Sanju Samson, who had been set to captain the team, will temporarily step down from his leadership role due to a recovery process from a finger injury. Instead, he will take the field as a specialist batter until he receives medical clearance to resume wicketkeeping and fielding duties.

SAMSON’S INJURY AND TEMPORARY LEADERSHIP CHANGE

Sanju Samson, one of the franchise's key players, suffered a finger injury during India’s T20I series against England in February. The injury required surgery and forced him out of the remainder of the series. Although he has resumed training, he is yet to receive full clearance from medical staff regarding his ability to perform wicketkeeping and fielding duties. As a result, the Rajasthan Royals have decided that Parag will take on the leadership role temporarily.

The franchise confirmed that Samson will continue to be an integral part of the team, contributing with the bat during this period. "Sanju Samson will remain a key player with the bat, and once he is fully fit to resume his wicketkeeping and fielding duties, he will return as the captain," the team stated.

RIYAN PARAG'S LEADERSHIP ROLE

Riyan Parag, who has been a consistent presence in the Royals’ squad for several seasons, will captain the team in Samson's absence. Parag has proven his leadership abilities by captaining Assam in domestic cricket, and his understanding of the team's dynamics makes him an ideal candidate for this temporary role. His leadership during the initial phase of IPL 2025 will be crucial as the team looks to make a strong start to the season.

RR’S IPL 2025 CAMPAIGN

Rajasthan Royals will begin their IPL 2025 campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23. Parag will lead the team in the first three matches before Samson resumes his role as captain. The Royals' first two home games are scheduled at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati, where they will face Kolkata Knight Riders (March 26) and Chennai Super Kings (March 30). The team’s remaining home matches will be played at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

A LOOK BACK AT RR’S PREVIOUS SEASON

In the 2024 IPL season, Rajasthan Royals had a solid campaign, finishing third on the points table and securing a playoff spot. However, their journey to the final was cut short after a defeat in the eliminator to Sunrisers Hyderabad.

With a new captain at the helm for the opening matches of IPL 2025, Rajasthan Royals will look to continue their competitive form and aim for another successful season in the tournament.
