Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has emphatically stated that if MS Dhoni is to feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL), it should only be as the captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK). According to Ganguly, Dhoni transforms into a "different beast" when entrusted with leadership responsibilities.

His remarks came shortly before CSK officially announced Dhoni’s return as captain for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season. Regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out due to a hairline fracture in his elbow, paving the way for the veteran’s comeback.

CAPTAINCY BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN DHONI, SAYS GANGULY

Speaking at an event where his AI digital avatar was launched by Ikonz, Ganguly didn’t mince words while praising Dhoni’s leadership:

> "If MS Dhoni has to play for CSK, he must be the captain. Because MS Dhoni, the captain, is a different beast."

Dhoni, now 43, has been under scrutiny for his limited batting impact and ongoing knee issues, which have hindered his mobility and performance this season. However, Ganguly believes Dhoni’s tactical acumen and experience still make him a vital asset for CSK.

> "He can still hit sixes — we’ve seen that. Of course, he’s not the same player from 2005, and that’s natural. But he still has the power and game awareness to deliver when needed," Ganguly noted.

DHONI RETURNS AMID CSK’S STRUGGLES

Dhoni’s reinstatement as captain comes at a crucial time for CSK, who are currently on a four-match losing streak. This will also mark his first appearance as skipper since leading the franchise to their fifth IPL title in 2023, equalling Mumbai Indians' record.

GANGULY ON KKR’S EDEN GARDENS WOES

Ganguly also weighed in on Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) inconsistent performances at home, particularly at Eden Gardens, where they’ve lost two of their three matches so far. A recent nail-biting four-run defeat to Lucknow Super Giants raised questions about KKR’s strategy.

> "They should’ve won that last game with an over to spare. Ask Ajinkya Rahane — he’ll tell you better. They've got terrific players, and Rahane himself is in top form. My only concern is seeing Rinku Singh batting too low in the order."

PITCH CONDITIONS AND HOME ADVANTAGE DEBATE

The ongoing debate around home advantage in IPL 2025 has also caught attention, with reports suggesting franchises haven’t received pitches tailored to their preferences. When asked about it, Ganguly gave a diplomatic response:

> "Yeah, why not? It depends on how things play out. I know why you’re asking, but I’ll refrain from commenting further."

CRICKET’S OLYMPIC DREAM: A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY

Turning to international cricket, Ganguly expressed optimism over the sport’s inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. He believes it’s a landmark moment, especially for Indian cricket.

> "It’s a huge opportunity for cricketers to aim for an Olympic medal. India is strong, and I truly believe we can win gold. This will inspire young athletes to dream of standing on the Olympic podium."
