Zaheer Khan, the former Indian cricketer, has expressed a strong desire to take on the role of India's head coach in the future, but with a twist—he wouldn’t apply for the position. Currently serving as a mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, Zaheer’s insight and experience have been invaluable in shaping the team's young talent as well as guiding seasoned players.

ZAHEER KHAN'S JOURNEY AND IMPACT ON IPL

One of the most iconic fast bowlers in Indian cricket history, Zaheer Khan played a pivotal role in India's triumph at the 2011 World Cup, where he was the leader of the pace attack, claiming 21 wickets in nine matches. His contributions were not just on the field but also recognized off it, as he was honoured with the prestigious Arjuna Award by the Indian President in 2011.

After retiring from international cricket, Zaheer transitioned into coaching roles, bringing his expertise to the IPL. He previously worked with Mumbai Indians (MI) as the Director of Cricket and Head of Global Development, helping nurture talent like Jasprit Bumrah. In 2024, Zaheer joined the Lucknow Super Giants as their mentor, continuing to pass on his wisdom to the next generation of cricketers.

ZAHEER'S ASPIRATION TO COACH INDIA

In a recent conversation at an event in Kolkata, Zaheer was asked about the possibility of him stepping into the role of head coach for Team India. His response, laced with humour, made it clear that while he would be honoured to take on such a prestigious role, he wouldn’t pursue it by applying. When asked directly if he would consider coaching the national team, Zaheer responded, “Not by applying?” He added, “In a heartbeat, it would be an honour to coach Team India.”

Zaheer's potential appointment as the head coach of Team India in the future could be a significant asset, given his vast experience in the IPL and his previous roles with MI. His deep understanding of the game, combined with his work with younger players, makes him an ideal candidate for a leadership role in Indian cricket.

IPL: A BREEDING GROUND FOR FUTURE TALENT

Zaheer also shared his views on the importance of the IPL in shaping the future of Indian cricket. He highlighted how the tournament has become a crucial platform for discovering new talent. "Earlier, talented players often drifted away from the game due to limited opportunities. But now, more players are staying in the game, chasing the dream of playing for an IPL franchise, and that dream is a stepping stone to the national team," Zaheer said.

He emphasized that the presence of uncapped players in IPL dressing rooms is a vital factor for their growth. Young players have the opportunity to learn from seasoned internationals like Nicholas Pooran, Rishabh Pant, and others. This environment, Zaheer believes, is essential for the continued success of Indian cricket.

LUCKNOW SUPER GIANTS’ IPL JOURNEY

Under Zaheer's mentorship, the Lucknow Super Giants are currently sixth in the 2025 IPL points table, with two wins and two losses. The team has undergone significant changes, including a new captain, Rishabh Pant. Despite the challenges, the team remains optimistic about their prospects in the ongoing season.

Meanwhile, Team India is currently being coached by Gautam Gambhir, who led the team to success in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Rahul Dravid, the former head coach, concluded his tenure after leading India to victory in the T20 World Cup.

With his wealth of experience and deep commitment to nurturing cricketing talent, Zaheer Khan’s future in Indian cricket, whether as a mentor or head coach, seems filled with potential.
