The Punjab Kings have suffered a significant blow midway through their IPL 2025 campaign, with star fast bowler Lockie Ferguson likely ruled out for the rest of the tournament due to a serious left thigh injury. The New Zealand pacer sustained the injury during Punjab's recent clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
FERGUSON SUFFERS MAJOR INJURY SETBACK
Ferguson's injury occurred just two balls into his spell, when he pulled up suddenly, clutching his left thigh before leaving the field in clear discomfort. Although the franchise has not yet confirmed the exact nature of the injury, early assessments suggest it’s a severe muscle strain — potentially ruling him out for the remainder of the season.
Punjab Kings’ fast bowling coach James Hopes confirmed the grim news.
"Ferguson is out indefinitely, and the chances of him returning before the end of the tournament are very slim. It looks like a pretty serious injury," Hopes said in a press briefing ahead of the team’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders.
A CRUCIAL LOSS FOR PUNJAB’S PACE BATTERY
The 33-year-old Kiwi had been a key figure in Punjab's bowling lineup, especially during the middle overs. In his four appearances this season, Ferguson picked up five wickets and provided valuable experience and control. His absence now leaves a considerable void in an already inconsistent PBKS bowling unit.
Punjab currently sit with three wins and two losses from their first five matches, and losing Ferguson at this juncture could disrupt their momentum during a critical stretch of the season.
REPLACEMENT OPTIONS ON THE TABLE
With Ferguson sidelined, PBKS will now explore alternative options to fill the gap in their pace attack. Overseas backups include Australian pacer Xavier Bartlett and Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai. Among Indian contenders, Vijaykumar Vyshak and Yash Thakur are in the mix — Vyshak in particular has caught the eye with his performances earlier in the tournament.
INJURY TROUBLES CONTINUE FOR FERGUSON
This latest setback adds to Ferguson’s growing list of fitness concerns. The pacer has dealt with recurring hamstring and calf issues over the past year, casting a shadow over his availability for the remainder of the 2025 cricket calendar.
As Punjab Kings look to recalibrate and push for a playoff berth, replacing Ferguson's firepower will be no easy task.
