Following India’s loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and their failure to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) finals, the pressure is mounting on both the Indian cricket team and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). In response to these setbacks, the BCCI is considering a series of stringent changes, including the potential reinstatement of the Yo-Yo test as a mandatory fitness requirement for players.
The Yo-Yo test, which was a key fitness assessment under former captain Virat Kohli’s leadership, was phased out under Rahul Dravid’s management. The decision to remove the test was made in light of concerns over player workload, injury management, and the added travel demands on players. However, it seems that the BCCI is reconsidering its stance, with reports suggesting that the test could soon make a return.
WHY THE YO-YO TEST COULD BE REINTRODUCED
The BCCI’s dissatisfaction with the team’s recent performances, especially the challenges faced by head coach Gautam Gambhir, has prompted the board to review fitness standards. According to the Times of India, some players may have become complacent without the Yo-Yo test in place, taking advantage of its absence. As a result, there are discussions within the board about reintroducing the test to ensure that players meet a specific level of fitness and to prevent any slackening of standards.
“A certain fitness level criteria needs to be reintroduced so that complacency doesn’t creep in,” a source told Times of India. “The board had previously eased up on the players due to the constant travel and focus on injury prevention. However, this has been taken lightly by some.”
OTHER CHANGES BEING IMPLEMENTED BY BCCI
In addition to the potential return of the Yo-Yo test, the BCCI is also making other changes to improve the team’s discipline and focus. One such change is the reduction in the duration of family stays during tours. Furthermore, it has been made mandatory for all players to travel together on the team bus, reinforcing a sense of unity and team spirit.
WHAT IS THE YO-YO TEST?
The Yo-Yo test is a demanding fitness evaluation that measures an athlete’s aerobic capacity and recovery ability. Players are required to run back and forth over a 20-meter distance at progressively higher speeds, with short recovery intervals between each round. The test continues until the player is unable to maintain the required pace due to fatigue, providing a clear indication of their overall fitness level.
By reinstating the Yo-Yo test and implementing stricter policies, the BCCI aims to address the current fitness concerns and ensure that players are in peak physical condition for future challenges.
