Mohammed Shami Shines in Ranji Trophy Return, Sparking Hopes for Border-Gavaskar Test Series
14 Nov 2024
Veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami has ignited excitement ahead of India’s Border-Gavaskar Test series with a stunning performance in the Ranji Trophy, signaling his readiness for a potential return to international cricket. Playing his first competitive match in exactly a year, Shami delivered a match-winning spell for Bengal, claiming four wickets against Madhya Pradesh at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
After a quiet start on Day 1, where he bowled 10 wicketless overs following Bengal’s modest total of 228, Shami came alive on Day 2. In a dramatic turnaround, he picked up four crucial wickets before lunch, finishing with figures of 4 for 54. His spell, which included 10 maiden overs, helped Bengal bowl Madhya Pradesh out for just 167, securing a dominant position in the match.
What stood out most in Shami’s performance was his ability to bowl long, testing spells, as he bowled 19 of Bengal’s 59 overs—more than any other bowler in the game so far. This not only underscored his fitness but also reassured fans and selectors of his readiness for the rigors of international cricket, especially with the upcoming Test series against Australia on the horizon.
SHAMI'S ROAD TO RECOVERY AND AUSTRALIA SERIES
Shami’s road to recovery has been a long one, with the fast bowler sidelined due to an ankle injury suffered during the 2023 ODI World Cup final. He had initially been slated for a return during the Test series against New Zealand last month but was delayed by a swollen knee and a subsequent side strain during his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.
These setbacks kept him out of the Border-Gavaskar Test squad.
However, his impressive return to competitive action in the Ranji Trophy could see him earn a place in the squad for the Australia series. With the first Test in Perth scheduled to begin on November 22, there are growing expectations that Shami could soon board a flight to join the team.
However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may decide to assess his fitness further by giving him another match, which would mean he could potentially join the squad for the second Test in Chandigarh, starting November 23.
While the final decision on Shami’s inclusion is still pending, his performance in the Ranji Trophy has certainly raised optimism about his return to the international fold. If he continues to maintain this level of fitness and form, he could prove to be a valuable asset for India in the crucial Border-Gavaskar series.
