Anshul Kamboj Makes History with 10-Wicket Haul in Ranji Trophy
15 Nov 2024
Haryana pacer Anshul Kamboj has etched his name in the annals of Ranji Trophy history by claiming an incredible 10 wickets in a single innings against Kerala in their Round 5 clash at Rohtak. On Friday, Kamboj's remarkable feat of 10/49 saw him become only the third bowler in the prestigious tournament’s history to achieve such a rare accomplishment, joining the ranks of Bengal’s Premangshu Chatterjee (10/20) and Rajasthan’s Pradeep Sundaram (10/78), who previously achieved the same milestone.
Kamboj’s extraordinary achievement came after an impressive display on Day 2, where he had already claimed eight wickets, putting Kerala on the backfoot. On the third day, he returned to bowl Kerala out for 291, dismissing Basil Thampi and Shoun Roger to complete his 10-wicket haul.
This performance broke the previous record for the best bowling figures for Haryana in the Ranji Trophy, which was set by Joginder Sharma with his eight-wicket performance against Vidarbha in the 2004-05 season. Kamboj's 10 wickets in an innings elevate his reputation as one of the brightest young talents in Indian domestic cricket. The 23-year-old from Karnal has already made waves in the cricketing world, having been part of the Mumbai Indians squad in the 2024 IPL season.
A STUNNING COLLAPSE AND KAMBOJ'S DOMINANCE
Kamboj’s stellar performance began on Day 2, when he had already claimed two wickets on the opening day and was instrumental in causing a collapse of Kerala’s batting lineup. After dismissing overnight batters Akshay Chandran (59) and Sachin Baby (52), who resumed at 138/2, Kamboj continued his devastating spell. He quickly accounted for Jalal Sexena before turning his attention to Mohammed Azarudden, who had scored 53, and MD Nidheesh. Both Azarudden and Nidheesh fell to Kamboj’s relentless pace and accuracy, reducing Kerala to 285/8 by the end of Day 2, before bad light brought play to a halt.
THE PERFECT 10
Kamboj began Day 3 with a flourish, claiming his ninth wicket in the 111th over when he bowled out Basil Thampi. Just six overs later, he completed his sensational achievement by dismissing Shoun Roger, inducing an outside edge to seal the historic 10-wicket haul.
This performance places Kamboj in illustrious company, with only three bowlers in international Test cricket history—Jim Laker (England), Anil Kumble (India), and Ajaz Patel (New Zealand)—having previously taken all 10 wickets in an innings. Kamboj's remarkable feat in the Ranji Trophy is now immortalized, not only for his skill and perseverance but also for its rarity in the world of cricket.
