24 Oct 2024
Ravichandran Ashwin etched his name into the annals of Test cricket history, becoming the highest wicket-taker in the World Test Championship (WTC) during the first Test between India and New Zealand in Pune.
The Indian spin maestro, renowned for his guile and accuracy, surpassed Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon on the morning of the second day, claiming his 188th WTC wicket. Ashwin's achievement came as a result of a brilliant spell of bowling, where he trapped New Zealand captain Tom Latham leg before wicket and induced a feather edge from Will Young that led to his dismissal.
With this milestone, Ashwin solidified his position as one of the most dominant bowlers in the WTC. His 188 wickets in 39 matches, at an average of 20.74, stand as a testament to his exceptional skills.
