Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal has reportedly made a significant decision to leave Mumbai and join Goa's domestic cricket team starting the next season.
A BOLD CAREER MOVE
Jaiswal, who has been a key player for Mumbai since his Under-19 days, has submitted an application to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) requesting a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to make the move to Goa. This development marks a major turning point in his cricketing career.
The talented youngster joins a list of cricketers, including Arjun Tendulkar and Siddhesh Lad, who have previously made the switch from Mumbai to Goa in recent years.
A PERSONAL DECISION FOR THE FUTURE
The opening batter’s decision comes after he participated in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy for Mumbai, following his stint with the Indian team during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. As part of the BCCI’s policy to ensure national team players participate in domestic red-ball cricket, Jaiswal, like other stars such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, made his return to state cricket for Mumbai.
However, from next season onwards, Jaiswal will wear the Goa jersey in domestic cricket. According to an MCA source, Jaiswal cited personal reasons for his decision to switch teams.
“We have received his request for an NOC, and he has mentioned personal reasons for his move to Goa,” the MCA source told Indian Express.
GOA CRICKET ASSOCIATION
WELCOMES JAISWAL
Shamba Desai, the secretary of the Goa Cricket Association, expressed excitement about the move. He confirmed that Jaiswal would be joining Goa for the upcoming season. “He has sought to play for us, and we welcome him. He will be playing for Goa from the next season,” Desai said.
When asked about the possibility of Jaiswal assuming the captaincy, Desai did not rule it out, acknowledging that the talented batter could be a candidate for the role. “Yes, he can certainly be considered for the captaincy. He plays for the Indian cricket team, so that could happen, and we will work towards appointing him. Regarding his availability for domestic competitions, we will discuss that further,” he added.
A STRUGGLING IPL 2025 CAMPAIGN
Jaiswal's move to Goa comes amid a tough start to his IPL 2025 campaign with Rajasthan Royals. Despite his potential, Jaiswal has struggled to make an impact, scoring only 34 runs in his first three matches. With an average of just 11.33 and a strike rate of 106.25, his highest score so far is a modest 29. His performances include scores of 1, 29, and 4, with the team facing difficulties in securing favourable results.
POWERPLAY TROUBLES AND UNDERWHELMING IPL SEASONS
Jaiswal has also faced challenges during the powerplay in the past two IPL seasons. Since the 2024 season, he has been dismissed eight times out of 18 attempts in the first three overs of an innings, a concerning 44% dismissal rate. This is a sharp increase from his 29% dismissal rate in the 2022 and 2023 seasons, during which he scored 625 runs.
The 2024 IPL season was particularly underwhelming for Jaiswal, as he managed 435 runs at an average of 31.07 and a strike rate close to 156, with just one century and one half-century to his name. Furthermore, his attacking shot percentage has dropped to 70% over the past two seasons, a significant decline compared to his more aggressive style in the previous seasons.
This move marks a new chapter in Yashasvi Jaiswal's cricketing career as he takes a step towards a fresh challenge with Goa in domestic cricket. His future performances, both for Goa and in IPL, will undoubtedly be closely watched by fans and experts alike.
