Born in Narayanganj, Rony Talukdar can be termed a tad unfortunate as he has to compete with Tamim Iqbal - arguably Bangladesh's best ever opening batsman for a place in the national side. He is an all-rounder - an opening batsman who bowls medium-pace and can also don gloves if required. After representing the Bangladesh Under-19s in 2008, Talukdar later that year made his domestic debut for Barisal Division. His younger brother Jony Talukdar is also a domestic player. In the 2014-15 first-class season, Talukdar aggregated 591 runs in the first three innings. Despite brilliant performances with the bat for two successive seasons, he couldn't make it into the Test squad. On 7th of July, 2016, Rony made his international debut in a T20I game against South Africa in Dhaka where he scored 21. That has been the only chance provided to him by the selectors. With one slot at the top almost pinned to Tamim, Talukdar faces stiff competition from Soumya Sarkar and Imrul Kayes for the other spot. There is no doubt about his talent, but the important factor is if he can be consistent at the international stage whenever he gets an opportunity. By Abhinand Raghavendran
